Choosing how to arrange content on a site is always a challenge, and the number of options available are limited. Content can be sorted alphabetically, by date, by geographic proximity, by keyword search relevance, and even randomly. We have chosen a date-driven approach to arranging content, with the most recent content appearing at the top of all of our job by Category, State, National Park, and Season pages (except for search results, which are sorted by keyword relevance).
Why use a date driven approach?
In weighing the different options, we determined that a date driven approach offered the most equitable solution to all employers. Every listing gets top of the page exposure when the listing is first posted. The only other viable options are to sort alphabetically (which would provide unequal exposure to employers higher up the alphabet) or to sort results randomly. A few problems arise from random sorting:
- Different Listing Duration - We offer several different listing duration options ranging from 1 week to 1 year, so by randomly arranging content, the shorter duration listings may never get an opportunity at the top of any page
- Consistency for Job Seekers - CoolWorks job seekers browse our site by viewing many different pages, shopping around for different job types in different locations. Being able to return to a page in the same session and easily find a listing that piqued their interest provides consistency and reduces frustration in their job search process, and arranging content randomly each time a page is loaded would eliminate that consistency
We hope you find this information helpful in considering which types of ads and term lengths will work best for you.
